Unless you have been living under a rock for the last 10 weeks, you have heard something about American Idol. The fans love to vote for their favorites and debate the merits of the various contestants. So, now that it is over, what will be the next topic at the coffee pot? Have you taken any opportunity to have it be a topic of your choosing? What are you doing for fun where you work? Life is all too serious and we have to take work seriously, but we don’t have to take ourselves seriously.
Have you had any kind of contest or positive rallying point lately? What can you do to lighten the stress a little? I know the president of a small manufacturing company who rides his unicycle through the office and out into the plant periodically. I attended a presentation they did the other day and heard again about some of the fun things they do and it made me wonder what stops the majority of companies from having fun. I know that the people in this company work very hard, are under a lot of pressure to perform, and they are very profitable, but they definitely know how to have fun. I see so much stress today everywhere I do and I don’t think we are at our best when we are under constant stress. We need to take time to step back, celebrate, laugh, recharge, and have some fun.
Speaking of fun, vacationing at the beach this week has been good for my outlook as well.
